Quick Quotes

Q. First U.S. Amateur. What were your expectations coming in?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: I mean, it's just take every shot as it goes. It's a massive field, one of the best fields in amateur golf. It's a hard cut to make, so it's just play every shot as it's in front of you and just not get ahead of yourself.

Q. Georgia Tech obviously has had great success recently in the U.S. Amateur. Have you had a chance over the last couple of years to talk to any of those guys that have won it like Strafaci and Ogletree?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: Yeah, they've been around for quite a bit. I got the chance, like I went and picked their brains of what happened. It's just one of these weeks you don't need anything special to get into match play, you just need to play solid golf and don't make any big mistakes. I feel like I did that today. But after that, match play anyone can beat anyone, so it's a free-for-all when match play starts. So I think it's just play solid golf until match play starts.

Q. Was it any one thing that they gave you advice on coming into this?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: I mean, it's not just them. I guess the overall expectation of this tournament, it's hard; it's the U.S. Open of amateur golf. There's not a lot of birdies given to you. You've just got to play smart golf and not get carried away and get too aggressive.

Q. What you were growing up in South Africa, who were some of the players that you followed and were your idols?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: I mean, the one that stands out is Louis Oosthuizen probably. I grew up in his foundation, playing golf in his academy, so I know him quite personally, as well. Yeah, the way he is on and off the golf course is amazing, so yeah, he's probably one of my idols.

Q. Let's talk about your 68 today. Great way to get started. Talk about your overall round, how you felt about it.

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: Yeah, I played pretty solid, I'm not going to lie. I didn't make any mistakes. When I hit a shot that I didn't want to hit, made a good recovery shot, so I didn't give the golf course anything to eat me up on. I think I had one three-point that I didn't want to have on the golf course and one short drive that I hit left in the wrong spot, but other than that it was pretty solid.

Q. One impressive thing was after you made the bogey at 11 you came back with back-to-back birdies. Tell me about the birdies on 12 and 13.

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT: Yeah, 11 was a three-putt on the par-3, and I was kind of going away there like listen, I've got a par-5 and a short par-4 up, let's just play smart, and I wedged it pretty tight on 13, and then 14 just drove it short of the green and made a nice putt.
