Q. 10, 12, 15, and 18 started off, front nine for you today. Can you tell us about kind of how it was on those shots.
JEFF MAGGERT: This course is kind of like what I used to be play 30 years ago in U.S. Opens. It's just fairways and greens. That's all you're trying to do. You're not thinking about birdied. And if you do hit some good shots, you want to take advantage of that.
Part of my round I played well, and other parts, some bad shots here and there. Overall, it was a good day. Even par, you know. It's U.S. Open style, old style U.S. Open.
Q. Justin Leonard said a par is a good score on this course; do you agree?
JEFF MAGGERT: Yes, that's all you're trying to make. There's some short holes out there where you hit good tee shots, short irons, wedges in there where you can make some birdies, but most of the day, if you're in the rough, you're just pitching back to the fairway. That's the key. You've got to drive it in the fairway.
Q. Is that what happened on 9?
JEFF MAGGERT: Yeah, in the rough. I could literally only hit it 30 yards. And I wasn't even -- I could swing as hard as I could. It might go a hundred, but at that point, just get it in the fairway and try to get it close to the hole and make a par.
Q. Playable? Limit the damage?
JEFF MAGGERT: It was a really difficult pin on 9, I thought. They did move the tees up a little bit.
But the right side of that hole they didn't top the rough. It's still like -- you know, on the rest of the course it's kind of topped. You can get it out 100, 120 yards, but over there it's just --
Q. Stay away.
JEFF MAGGERT: -- knee high, yeah.
Q. You've won before. Does that help you prepare for a round like this?
JEFF MAGGERT: If anything, this course is more like I used to play the U.S. Opens 30 years ago, and I played well in a lot of U.S. Opens. I understand that type of golf where you're not coming out here and trying to make seven or eight birdies a day.
Literally, all you're trying to do is hit the fairway on every hole and then go from there.
If you're in the fairway, get it on the green. Hopefully you'll have a shot to make a putt. That's kind of the way we used to play. Anyway, we'll see.
