Brewers - 3, Rays - 2
Q. Obviously a lot went into that game back and forth. You did run into a couple outs on the bases, specifically the Mesa play. If you could kind of -- was there any expectation to that?
KEVIN CASH: Ultimately Victor is really competing, trying to do something to make something happen, put a little pressure on the defense, and it didn't work in our favor.
Q. Was the Aranda one a hit and run?
KEVIN CASH: No, it was just a 3-2 pitch that we just -- that's on me ultimately. So much trust in Chandler putting the ball in play. But he had a pretty nasty pitch. It looked like down and in, check, swung.
Q. What was your view on that last play with the replay they overturned? Was there any thought to pinch-hitting for Jonny against Megill there with the lefties on the bench?
KEVIN CASH: No. My thought was it looked like a close play. Nick Rogers did a good job of recognizing that it was really close. In the moment, I don't think he thought too strongly about it, but at that point why not challenge it? They've got a lefty up with DL Hall sitting in the bullpen, ready to go. He had been throwing for a couple of minutes, so he was ready. I had confidence that Jonny was going to go up and give a good at-bat, and he did.
Q. William Contreras made two great defensive plays. Does it change the approach knowing that, if you're too aggressive, he can definitely make you pay on that defensive side?
KEVIN CASH: Look, he's a very talented player on both sides of the ball. We knew that coming in. Not surprised by anything that he did, but that's not going to change our aggressive approach, certainly on the bases.
Q. You guys had a pretty consistent aggressive approach on Misiorowski. How would you assess how your batters did?
KEVIN CASH: Look, he's so talented. He's such a special pitcher. I felt like for him to be out of the game at five innings, there's a small win in that.
The problem is when you knock him out of the game, you've got just an elite bullpen that can match up and come in the ballgame like they did and kept us quiet there between Uribe, Ashby, and at the end with Megill.
Q. During the replay at the end, are all your talk with coaches and players in the dugout about the possibility of what happens next, or you discuss whether you think which way the call is going to go?
KEVIN CASH: We become a fan at that point. If there was a decision to be made, we'd be prepared to make it. I felt like in that moment we were -- once I saw the replay a couple times, I felt like it was going to get overturned and then felt good about Jonny going up there against Megill with two outs.
Q. The first inning for them, the ball that Jonny looks like he has a really good beat on it, can't hang on. Taylor ripped at him, blistered at him, just off his glove. Bad breaks, just how it goes?
KEVIN CASH: I thought Jonny covered a lot of ground right there to even make that play close. Highlight reel play. I don't think we did too many things wrong. They did some things right. Squared some balls up. We were playing infield in with Contreras. They had already gotten one in right there.
It looked like Contreras hit that ball really hard and probably had some topspin on it, on top of it. Difficult ball to catch.
Q. What do you think of the job Nick did the rest of the way?
KEVIN CASH: Outstanding. He was really good. Nick's pitches, velo was spiked up a little bit. I'm guessing everybody's velo is going to be a little amped in this setting.
Nick didn't let the two runs early on factor into anything else once he went out for the second inning. Certainly gave us every opportunity, kept it right there. Really impressed and proud of the way Nick went about it.
Q. As competitive as this Game 1 was where you guys battled to the last out and knowing you have Drew on the mound tomorrow, I would assume, coming out of a loss, you still can feel pretty positive about that part of it?
KEVIN CASH: Yeah, this is an extremely confident group. You know that, we know that. They're going to be fine. I think the frustration comes from we were one swing of the bat away right at the end of potentially taking the lead.
We came up a little bit short, but there's some benefit maybe from a loss. We saw Ashby. We saw Uribe. We saw Megill. I'd like to think that's going to help us moving forward a little bit.
Q. How much does that just kind of seeing those same relievers multiple times, go into your bullpen thinking, the way you manage this game with Matz and some of the other guys?
KEVIN CASH: A little bit. I think times seen, it matters. I don't know how much you can quantify for it, but it certainly matters to some degree.
I felt like our bullpen came in and did a really nice job. Chourio hits a ball right by Aranda. Other than that, for them to navigate through those innings where they had some traffic, that was good for us.
